What the heck is Hygge and how do we get some?

Hygge is a Danish word (pronounced hu gah), and it means “A coziness of the soul. Enjoying life’s simple pleasures.” Hygge engenders a feeling of contentment and well being. As I look out my window and the snow is falling once again on our winter wonderland, I think Hygge is just what we need to embrace to help us make our way through these cold, wintry months. How do we do that, you ask? Read on…

  • Create an oasis of comfort and calm in our home. This can be a designated room or special corner to sit quietly, do yoga, meditate or read.

  • Snuggle up and drink warm lemon water first thing in the morning to kick start our metabolism. It also maintains the PH of our bloodstream and helps maintain gut health.

  • Begin each day with a one-word intention. This positive affirmation sets the tone for the day. The energy we put out into the universe comes back to us.

  • Add nourishing seasonal spices to beverages and meals. Cinnamon is warming and helps keep blood sugar low. Ginger aids with digestion. Turmeric is a powerful anti-viral spice and is an antioxidant as well. Pomegranate seeds stimulate the growth of new skin cells, packs a ton of vitamin C and can help reduce the risk of cancer.

  • Sleep deep. Set a routine before bed and stick to it. Unplug electronics at least an hour before you go to sleep. Dab lavender essential oil on the neck to help relax the mind and body. Aim for 6-8 hours of sleep each night.
