The Amazing Skin Benefits of Vitamin C
It is common knowledge that Vitamin C is helpful in preventing the sniffles and boosting the immune system, but did you know that it is also instrumental in preventing and repairing sun damage, reducing wrinkles and keeping our skin looking firm and plump? Vitamin C plays a vital role in synthesizing collagen and fighting the effects of air pollution on our skin. This little vitamin is a powerhouse that can be added to your diet by eating tangerines, oranges, grapefruit, kiwi or red peppers, among other fruits and veggies.
You can also apply Vitamin C directly to your skin. New York dermatologist, Marnie Nussbaum MD, recommends choosing a serum or a moisturizer containing Vitamin C to get maximum absorption benefit, as opposed to a cleanser which washes off. (L-ascorbic acid is also a name for Vitamin C so look for that name on the product label). Vitamin C can break down with exposure to light and air, so make sure the bottle is opaque and airtight. Some Vitamin C powders have recently been introduced to the market and they are activated when mixed with a cream or gel, so the freshness is a sure thing. You may notice some initial redness or tingling when you first apply, but that will most likely be temporary. (If irritation persists, let your dermatologist know.
So the old standby Vitamin C plays an important role in keeping our skin looking young and fresh as well as keeping colds and viruses at arms length. Way to go!
