Spotlight on Melons

Wandering through the farmer’s market or grocery store you will see a mountain of melons in season. Here’s why you should start a love affair with them…

Melons, specifically cantaloupe and watermelon, are more than 90% water. They are a major source of hydration for your body and skin! These melons are also low in calories, but a good source of fiber. This means they are a great after workout snack, because they keep you feeling full and less tempted to snack on a bag of Cheetos.

Cantaloupe is rich in potassium, which helps your muscles contract and expand as you exercise. Watermelon contains lycopene, which studies have shown helps reduce the risk of some cancer. For an impromptu backyard happy hour, stack cubed watermelon, cantaloupe and feta cheese on a small skewer and top it of with a fresh mint leaf. Your friends will be so impressed!
